Chapter 22

Rika

Rika was afraid when she saw Nika’s feet climb out of the box. She didn’t know if “company” meant Zombies or Krackles, but she didn’t want Nika to face either one. She should be out there, not her twin. At least she had some experience dealing with them.

If she was afraid before, she was petrified when the clicks of a Krackle “seeing” filled the air. Thoughts of being picked up by the Krackle down at the creek flashed through her mind, and she instinctively scooted farther back into the pipe. Guilt flooded her, guilt for leaving her sister to face the Krackles.

She almost crawled forward again to rush to Nika’s defense, but a simple “Go, Rika,” halted her in her tracks. She’d told Nika to freeze when the Krackle had her, and it had saved her. Now, she had to stay free until she could figure out what to do.

“Sorry, Baba. Stay strong, and I’ll get you out of there,” she muttered, tears rolling down her eyes as she pushed back. No matter how logical it was, she couldn’t help but feel that she was abandoning her sister and mother.

As she retreated, Rika could just hear some voices, human voices, but she couldn’t make out what they were saying. She considered crawling forward again, but to what end? Unless Nika came back?

That was enough for her. She sure couldn’t crawl backward the length of the drainage pipe, so she reversed her direction, back to the catchment box. She heard a few more snatches of conversation, maybe Gren talking, then nothing. Rika froze, barely breathing, as she listened for something, anything to tell her what had happened. After twenty minutes, she has to accept that whatever happened was done. It was time for her to go down the pipe and find Fel. And Hero.

Rika smiled at the thought. It was so like her sister to name the dog Hero. Not that it didn’t fit, but still, Nika wasn’t going to name the dog something meaningless.

To get down the pipe and out of the depot, however, meant she had to turn around. That would be impossible while inside the pipe. She had to go past the grate and into the box. She stuck out a hand to start, then paused. The cover to the box was open, and Rika didn’t know how or what had set the Krackles off. Derek’s cousin, for all of being some sort of Krackle engineer, hadn’t any answers, but the cover being off the box making a difference made sense.

So, what are you going to do, Rika Ingersoll?

It was hard to tell from her vantage, but the light looked like it was beginning to fail. Rika wondered if it made sense to wait for darkness before entering the box and turning around. It wouldn’t matter to the Krackles, she knew, but what about the zombies? They had human eyes, even the smoothies. If whatever happened had put them on alert, then they might have the box under surveillance.
